Guide · Clarity
How to speak more clearly.
Clear speech is mostly clear order. Say the point, stop, then add only what someone asks for.
Five habits
- Lead with the answer. Your first sentence should be the thing you would say if you had only one.
- Count your words. A strong answer to a hard question usually fits in about forty.
- Cut the cushions. "Basically", "kind of" and "I feel like" make a true statement sound unsure.
- Pause instead of filling. A one-second silence sounds composed. "Um" sounds lost.
- Choose the exact word. "Contend" and "suggest" are not the same claim. Precision beats rare vocabulary.
